"Davie Poplar"
Reigning regally over the famous McCorkle Place Quad on the University of North Carolina Campus at Chapel Hill, Davie Poplar is one of the campus's most beloved landmarks. Davie Poplar was named for William Richardson Davie, a Revolutionary War General and circuit-riding lawyer. He is know today as "The Father of the University of North Carolina". Many legends abound concerning the role this ancient tree played in the revered history of the University of N.C. Some claim that the plans for the University were designed under the spreading limbs of this venerable landmark in 1792. more »
